Discussion
In my egg osmosis lab report my hypothesis was that the egg
within the aunt jemimas syrup would shrink due to the effects of osmosis and I
was right. I made this educated guess because I knew that the egg had a higher
concentration of water within it then the syrup had and since the laws of
osmosis state that the water particles move from an area of higher
concentration to an area of lower concentration, the water within in the egg
would leave the egg to obtain equilibrium and make the egg shrink. My background
research from this is from the science 8 text book and I also benefitted from
class discussions.
In the egg osmosis lab I submerged eggs into different
liquid substances to get a better idea on the concept of osmosis and diffusion.
Our independent variable was the substances the eggs were in (water
and aunt j’s syrup). Our dependant variable was the size of the egg and our
controlled variable was the substance which the eggs were placed in. Each
variable was carefully taken and not overlooked therefore it proved to be a fair
test.
Our results for our eggs were what I expected and the eggs
changed immensely. In data table 1, we started off with two plain eggs ad they
came out completely different then at the start. Egg 1 hard shell was turned
into a liquid layer from the water and looked like it had grown in size. Egg 2
had completely lost its shell from the syrup and was very weak. The egg was
also much smaller than originally. The insides, volume, and mass of the eggs
also changed too. Egg ones yolk was very watery yet it still looked like normal
egg yolk and egg 2 looked like egg yolk also but dryer. Egg 1 original mass was
60.7 grams and it was raised to 69.8 grams. Egg 2 mass was 59.6 grams and it
was lowered to 44.7 grams. The volume in the beakers changed a lot too. Both
the plain water and syrup started off with 150mL of each. The water finished
off with only 125 mL left while the syrup gained volume and was increased to
170 mL.
My egg osmosis lab was successful in the end. If I had to change
anything about the experiment though it would be the independent variables such
as the water and syrup and maybe add on more substances. Over the course of this
experiment no problems were identified causing a very valid experiment. I have
Had very fun on this Osmosis lab and would like to do one similar to it
soon.
